Abstract   Rural Marketing is as old as civilization. The rural population has shown a trend of wanting to move into a state of gradual urbanization in terms of exposure, habits, lifestyles and lastly, consumption patterns of goods and services. Information Technology involves the electronic processing, storage and communication of information, where anything that can be represented in digital form is included in the term “information”. Information Technology dramatically increases shareability of information and this affects the economics of provision of information goods and services. The paper highlights the need of focusing on rural market, significance of rural market, factors influencing IT transition in rural development and challenges of IT for rural development
